LEVITICUS 10:1-2
Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.
A few years ago a research team studying American lifestyles met a captivating young nurse named Sheila Larson. “I believe in God,” Sheila told her interviewer. “However, I’m not a religious fanatic. I can’t remember the last time I went to church. My faith has carried me a long way. It’s ‘Sheilaism.’ Just my own little voice.”
Nadab and Abihu were just like Sheila. God laid out in great detail the way He was to be worshiped, but Aaron’s sons decided to do their own thing. Perhaps they thought they could improve on God’s instructions.
In any event, they chose to come to God on their terms. They offered “strange” or “profane” fire on the altar. They rejected God’s authority and God’s will; His response was to destroy them.
Many people today are trying to come to God on their own terms. They believe in God but they have their own way of reaching Him. Some seek to find God in nature; others are hoping to gain His approval through good works.
God, however, has made it very clear that there is only one way to reach Him—through Jesus Christ. The Savior said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
Don’t be fooled by those who tell you that there are “many ways to God.” God has declared that there’s only one-through His Son, Jesus. We either come God’s way or not at all. There’s no place for “doing your own thing.”
THE ONE WAY TO GOD IS THE SON-WAY.
