Read 2 Corinthians 6
We commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in
troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments
and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger … having
nothing, and yet possessing everything.
2 Corinthians 6:4–5, 10
What a price Paul paid to be faithful in his ministry! Yet how little the
Corinthians really appreciated all he did for them. They brought sorrow to his heart, yet he was “always rejoicing” in Jesus Christ (v. 10).
He became poor that they might become rich (1 Cor. 1:5; 2 Cor. 8:9).
The Greek word translated “poor” means “the complete destitution of
a beggar.”
Was Paul wrong in appealing for their appreciation? I don’t think
so. Too many churches are prone to take for granted the sacrificial
ministry of pastors, missionaries, and faithful church officers. Paul was
not begging for praise, but he was reminding his friends in Corinth
that his ministry to them had cost him dearly.
It has well been said, “If you want to find gratitude, look in the
dictionary.” Are we showing gratitude to those who have ministered
to us?
Something to Ponder
What are some sacrifices you have made for others lately that didn’t
seem to be appreciated? How did you feel?
