Read Colossians 1:9
Since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying
for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will
through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Colossians 1:9
When we are born into God’s family by faith in Jesus Christ, we are
born with all we need for growth and maturity. This is the theme of
Colossians: “You have been given fullness in Christ” (2:10). “Do not
look for something new,” Paul warned the church. “Continue to grow
in that which you received at the beginning” (author’s paraphrase).
Each of us needs to have the “knowledge of [God’s] will.” The
Greek word translated “knowledge” in Colossians 1:9 carries the
meaning of “full knowledge.” There is always more to learn about
God and His will for our lives. As Christians we should never dare
to say that we have arrived and need to learn nothing more. Like the
college freshman who handed in a ten-page report on “The History of
the Universe,” we would only declare our ignorance.
God is not a distant dictator who issues orders and never explains.
Because we are His friends (John 15:13–15; James 2:23), we can know
what He is doing and why He is doing it. As we study His Word and
pray, we discover new and exciting truths about God’s will for us as
His people.
Something to Ponder
What steps can you take in order to better know and understand
God’s will for your life?
