EXODUS 32:25-26 : Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aaron had not
restrained them, to their shame among their enemies), then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp,
and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side, let him come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered
themselves together to him.
Fence-sitting can be hazardous, like it was for the New York family who bought a ranch out West,
where they intended to raise cattle. One day a friend from back East visited and asked if the ranch
had a name. “Well,” said the would-be cattleman, “I wanted to name it the Bar-J. My wife favored
Suzy-Q, one son liked the Flying-W, and the other wanted the Lazy-Y.
So we’re calling it the Bar-J-Suzy-Q-Fly-ing-W-Lazy-Y.” “But where are all your cattle?” the friend
asked. “Unfortunately,” the man replied, “none of them survived the branding.”
Moses allowed no such fence-sitting. When he came down from Mount Sinai and found the camp in
an uproar, he threw down a challenge. A choice had to be made. Either the people were on the Lord’s
side or they weren’t. There was no middle ground.
Too many Christians like to sit on the fence. They want one foot in the faith and the other foot in the
world. They don’t want to stand out too sharply from unbelievers for fear of negative responses.
They like to fit in. But, on the other hand, they don’t want to be excluded from believers’ fellowship
either. They really don’t know what to do, so they take a prominent position on the fence.
If you’ve been sitting on the fence, isn’t it time you stood for something? Consider Moses’ challenge
to his people. Make a choice. Either take your stand for the Lord or side with the world. Whatever you
do, don’t straddle the fence. You won’t find any of God’s heroes there.
