No one can escape coming into the world as a baby, because that is the only way to get here! But it is tragic when a baby fails to mature. No matter how much parents and grandparents love to hold and cuddle a baby, it is their great desire that the baby grow up and enjoy a full life as a mature adult. God has the same desire for His children. That is why He calls to us, “Go on to maturity!”
When I was in kindergarten, the teacher taught us our ABCs. (We didn’t have television to teach us in those days.) You learn your ABCs so that you might read words, sentences, books—any literature. But you do not keep learning the basics. You must use
the basics to go on to better things.
If we are going to make progress, we have to leave childhood behind and go forward in spiritual growth.
Verse for today: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation” (1 Peter 2:2, NIV).
Take time to read: 1 Corinthians 3:1-3; Hebrews 6:1-12; Ephesians 4:14.
Action assignment: What are the spiritual ABCs? List what you understand them to be. How many of these “basics” of the Christian faith have you mastered? Or more pointedly, how many have mastered you? Pray that God helps you to mature— according to His timetable.
