One of the funniest cartoons I ever saw showed a pompous lawyer reading a client’s last will and
testament to a group of greedy relatives. The caption read: “I, John Jones, being of sound mind
and body, spent it all!”
When Jesus Christ wrote His last will and testament for His church, He made it possible for all
of His true followers to share His spiritual riches. Instead of spending it all, Jesus Christ paid it
all. His death on the cross and His resurrection make possible our salvation.
He wrote us into His will, then He died so the will would be in force. Then He arose again that
He might become the heavenly advocate (lawyer) to make sure the terms of the will were
correctly followed!
In Ephesians 1, Paul names just a few of the blessings that make up our spiritual wealth:
He has chosen us.
He has adopted us.
He has accepted us.
He has redeemed us.
He has forgiven us.
He has revealed God’s will to us.
He has made us an inheritance.
He has sealed us.
He has given us an earnest (a down payment to guarantee our redemption).
Rejoice! “God … has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight”
(Ephesians 1:3-4, NIV).
Read: Ephesians 1:1-14 and find each of the above listed riches that you, as a Christian, have in
Jesus Christ.
Action assignment: Match the list of spiritual blessings mentioned in today’s reading with verses
in Ephesians 1:1-14. After you have done that, see if you can from memory write out the list of
spiritual blessings. Thank God for making these blessings yours.
