Submission to God and others is an act of faith. There is danger in submitting to others; they
might take advantage of us. But we can trust God. His mighty hand that directs our lives can also
direct the lives of others.
God never exalts anyone until that person is ready for it. First the Cross, then the crown; first the
suffering, then the glory. Moses was under God’s hand for forty years before God sent him to
deliver the Jews from Egypt.
Joseph was under God’s hand for at least thirteen years before God lifted him to the throne. It
was pride—a desire to be like God—that stirred Eve to take the forbidden fruit. The only
antidote to pride is the grace of God, and we receive that grace whenever we yield ourselves to
God. The evidence of that grace is that we yield to one another.
Verse for today: “For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself
shall be exalted” (Luke 14:11).
Also read: Proverbs 6:16-17; 8:13; Philippians 2:1-11; 1 Peter 5:5-6; 1 John 2:16.
Action assignment: Pride can be very subtle. After all, we have rights, don’t we? Are you ever
on the defensive? Watch today for defensiveness in your attitudes. Then give these defenses to
God. Write them down to help you become more aware of subtle pride. God wants to give you
the grace to be humble and submissive to Himself and others.
