God’s Word is one of the best tools for resisting temptation. When Jesus was tempted by
Satan, He used the Word of God to defeat him. Paul admonished believers to take “the sword
of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17) in their battle against Satan and his
demonic assistants.
The Bible is able to establish us because it is inspired of God. It is not simply a book of
religious ideas or good moral advice; it is the very Word of God. It is “profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
It has been well said that doctrine tells us what is right, reproof tells us what is not right,
correction tells how to get right, and instruction tells us how to stay right.
Know this: “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places….Take … the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:12, 17).
For further study: Matthew 4:1-11; 2 Timothy 3:16.
Action assignment: Commit Ephesians 6:12, 17 to memory (see above) and talk to God,
asking Him to enable you to grasp more fully the message of this passage and its relationship
to you.
