The Holy Spirit empowered Paul to minister, enabling him to perform mighty signs and
wonders. The miracles God gave Paul to do were “signs” that they came from God and
revealed Him to others.
And they were “wonders” in that they aroused the wonder of the people. But their purpose
was always to open the way for the preaching of the Gospel. Miracles were given to
authenticate the messenger and the message, but by themselves they could never save the
lost.
The Spirit of God also empowered Paul to share the Word in order to “make the Gentiles
obedient” (Romans 15:18). It was “by word and deed” that the apostle shared the Good
News.
“By word and deed” we today can share the love of God with the lost around us. Changes in
conduct and character are just as much miracles of the Holy Spirit as the healing of the sick.
Verse for today: “I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has
accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and
done—by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit” (Romans 15:18-
19).
More to consider: Hebrews 2:1-4; Acts 1:8; Psalm 147:5;
2 Corinthians 4:7.
Action assignment: Define the word power: Now think about the awesomeness of God’s
power. Compare it to the most powerful thing mankind has discovered—atomic power.
God’s power is still infinitely greater. Praise Him for His power and love to work in you His
perfect will. Ask Him to help you share His love “by word and deed” as you go through this
day.
